After reflecting on last night and previous designs I had created, I felt some of the more simplistic designs were the most successful, whether this is because they seem the most realistic or just because they aren't distracting to the eye. I also feel the balance of texture and shape is carefully thought about here. I experimented with the idea of simply a skirt that would be slightly transparent, I then looked at removing the transparency however felt that this was too strong and took the delicate nature away from the design which I feel made it stand out. To develop it further, I kept the transparency and then created a repeated pattern of the textural bobble on half the top and neckline. I wanted to keep this design simple and refined so left it there.

Screenshot 2020-04-24 at 11.14.43.png  Screenshot 2020-04-24 at 11.16.32.pngScreenshot 2020-04-24 at 19.22.21.pngScreenshot 2020-04-24 at 11.23.45.png

With my last design being simple, I felt the need to create something more innovative. I looked at an increased sponge top, with netting design around the arms.  I then wanted to experiment and bring in the Macrame Knots, I experimented with the knots in a one legged design which I think worked really well and I could picture a trouser or dress design with this large knot design. From my research I was really drawn to the big Macrame designs and was fascinated by the way they hung on the body. I then developed this further by looking at a transparent skirt design with the leg feature in the Macrame knot design. I really liked this piece and kept it to one leg as I didn't want it to be over bearing.  I liked this idea and felt the colours of the overall piece worked well together. The pastel blue Macrame and then pink orange neon sponge with added detail in a darker blue and orange.

When looking through my samples and the contrast in my earlier work, I felt it would be a shame to not see how the fabric samples could have been placed on the body . I created a loose fitting dress design, with a piece of rope and rubber holding the top of the dress. I thought this was an interesting dress design however maybe needed some more intricate details and materials in some places to develop it further and balance the design out more. I feel that if this had been created in real life it may be lacking contrast.

Screenshot 2020-04-29 at 11.47.23.png

When looking at the designs I had been creating, I felt it might be beneficial to create a less worked design . I repositioned the top and the bottom to see what would naturally fit on the shape of the body without manipulating it too much. I felt this design looked effortlessly pleasing however was deeply considered and thought about. I feel it is really balanced and the bright colours work well. It is designed to show an oversized jumper with different arm holes, with a one legged mesh short. I think this is one of my most successful designs so far, showing the multi skills in designing garments with more aspects and bright colours. I feel it is innovative however could also be seen manufactured down to realistic wear.

Screenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.15.21.pngScreenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.18.11.pngScreenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.22.31.pngScreenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.22.54.pngScreenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.25.17.pngScreenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.30.23.png Screenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.31.37.pngScreenshot 2020-04-26 at 15.33.54.png

With this design, I developed it and exhausted the different possibilities for the bottom half of the garment. I experimented with different scale and transparency. This was really helpful to see what would work well and be pleasing to the eye. Due to the colour being slightly dull I was drawn to the bigger and oversized skirt/ dress design.

These last two designs, I focused on the rope Macrame knot.  This was complicated due to the technical aspect  and difficult to create and visualise my ideas , however, I felt it was successful. I started by looking at a complete macrame garment that would hang off the body. I felt it was key to involve different elements of scale in order for the garment to stand out. I question whether the garment needed a contrasting element but decided this would defeat the point of focusing on the knot alone.

My next design I selected elements from the Knot design that worked well  as the trouser leg in Macrame knot. Then from experimenting with virtual draping, scale and pattern I was really drawn to the repeated diagonal knot pattern/ design on the shoulder. I could really visualise this in real life and  thought it would be an ideal final design due to its subtleness yet also complex features and parts. I wanted this design to look more balanced therefore created an under layer which was a grey bicycle leg and then created a knitted trouser/ legging for the right leg. I think it would have been interesting to play with the contrast, lightness and darkness of the rope. This could have made the design more  exciting.  If I had enough rope, I would have liked to create the repeated macrame top design into a sample.

Friday 20th- Evening . Design Development

Design Development

Screenshot 2020-04-24 at 10.44.54.png final design 3

I have spent today experimenting with design development on photoshop. Initially I struggled using the media, however I am really pleased with my end results from this evening. I cut, pasted, copied and repositioned areas of samples that I felt were really strong. As many of  my samples consisted of the dish cloth and sponge, I experimented by creating a loose randomly pleated dress design, to push this design further and incorporate another aspect of my work I placed the Macrame rope knot behind, I really liked how these colours fitted together and the rope would be placed behind the dress on the back of the garment.

 photoshop model ready 2 copy.jpg

For the next design I deconstructed the sample and isolated parts I thought would work well together. I wanted my next design to have a repeated textural pattern. I diagonally repeated the sponge and green rope. It was refreshing to create a more simple design in shape, with a  complex material and texture.

Screenshot 2020-04-23 at 12.56.50.png

This I feel was one of my strongest samples I had created. I was pleased with the scale of this sample on the figure. It is placed to show an over size sweater with a loose ankle design. I felt because the content of the sample/ design was complicated and it had many different colours and areas, the silhouette should be kept simple, to not distract from the sample itself.

Thursday 19th March Part 2

Experimentation with more samples and further materials.

I used bigger rope to do a Macrame knot which was really pleasing and interesting . It was a great material to work with and transformed into a rich textural pattern. I could easily visualise how it could fit on the body and different ways it could be placed. It was also easier to see the knot and was nice to really scale up my samples.

Progress Since Feedback

Since my last feedback  with Suzanne online 2 weeks ago, I have found wedding photos and every day marriage photos consisting of key events/ chores. I researched the history of weddings to take my project down a different path. From this I’ve been experimenting with these objects and learning how to do macrame knots. I feel they have been successful and want to carry on developing samples and experimenting. I have used  sponge, yarn, tea bags, wire, thread, washing tablets etc.

My loose plan is to carry on creating and having fun with my samples, then produce sketchbook work and connecting photos I’ve found with samples and then add exploratory drawings. To use my samples  further, I plan to scan them and experiment with scale and repetition on photoshops for clothing design.

Questions for Naomi

What is my work missing- sketchbook and workflow. Drawings etc- what type?

Are there any things I need to do or consider when doing my designs?

Thursday 19th March Part 1

Today was a really exciting day, I felt I excelled at making interesting samples that were really fun to make. I experimented by mixing different textures, sizes and different repetitive patterns to create something that is aesthetically pleasing. I have also ordered some different materials for my macrame knots.

Tuesday 17th March

I've spent today restarting my laptop and downloading Photoshop and learning how to use this tool in order to do my design development and ideas. I would like to scan samples and increase and rotate them on the body. I feel this really be beneficial to me as some of my anticipated macrame knots are tiny so it would be interesting to see what these would  look like scaled up in real life, if I had the resources. While waiting for my laptop to be finished, I have also been experimenting with doing Macrame knots using some different materials, including rough textured rope, coloured laces, and gold strings.

I struggled to think of sample ideas and ways in which I can bring this project into my sketchbook and use more out the box objects. When I reflect on previous projects, the most successful one uses really interesting and unusual objects. If objects are not commonly used in textiles, it's more exciting to use and presents more original samples. The objects I'm going to look at will be for confetti- paper and tissue , (tying the knot-) string,  rope, threads and organic cottons. For everyday married life- sponge, baby wipes, cleaning cloths, tea, coffee, appliance instructions, removal boxes, cleaning products, pottery- (wedding gifts), pet bowls, biscuits, wedding rings- wire, aluminium wire. Also, (first home) building materials including wood, brick and concrete.

I also feel that for me it will be more interesting and stimulating  to use these objects with abnormal shapes, textures and dimensions. It will be exciting to mix these objects together. To ensure productivity and efficiency I'm going to do sample tasks, 'i.e. 2 minute sample, sample combining 2 objects, sample using the words ' raw'. I will try to brainstorm words that are also fitting with the ideas of  ' everyday married life, divorce and breakup'

I have thought about creating different types of knots and will research into these. I feel I need visuals to ground these objects and ensure it is clear in my sketchbook.  I will use tomorrow to look through old family photos that could  help me visualise my ideas.

Monday 16th March

I spent today putting work in my book and finding material links,  colour samples and drawing that fits well with the page themes.

Sunday 15th March

I decided to use today to push my project forward into the history of weddings and begin the pages to introduce research. I collaged photos of my parents wedding with a tight red knit sample with a gold ring on top. The knit sample was created on a high tension showing the close, tight and strong bond on a wedding day which clearly represents the happiness in marriage, which is where I plan to take the project. I also looked into the dress my mother wore, the lace and thin woven material, which I feel represents the delicacy of love and marriage, and how it must be treated with care and respect. I had collated different materials that I felt would be used and placed this next to the photo showing fabrics that could be seen on a wedding day. I also placed a table decoration on the page from my sisters wedding which fits directly with the materials on the page. Following on from my theme of delicacy and care. An idea of a knit sample is using thin wool which is unravelling to represent how quickly the marriage and feelings can fall apart if not treated respectful and caring. I will try  to create something else which could show this.
I was really pleased with the productivity of today and the ideas for pushing the project down a different path. The previous pages had been very packed and full of exploratory drawings. After critique from a non-creative , they stated how the pages could be hard to understand due to how full they were, therefore  I placed the collages with more space. I felt this was really successful, pleasing to look at and clearer for the viewer to understand. It also reminded me of how 'less ' can be effective and successful. However,  this is  was helped by using  interesting imagery for the samples.

Thursday 12th March

Todays plan: carry on with my 2 do list- feeling excited for blind drawing as feel this will instigate and inspire good samples further on.

Today was a successful day, I felt inspired and was pleased with my collaging. In my opinion it was successful. I felt I had portrayed my project theme clearly in the first pages and felt inspired from this page. I wrote contrasting words and split them up within the collage to portray the idea of miscommunication as it would be illegible to the reader. I also inserted a written piece from a book which I felt was thought provoking and helpful.

In the afternoon I decided to research and listen to different therapy videos on divorce and different people explaining their divorce stories. I did a  blind drawing task from this which I initially didn't think I would struggle with as previous blind drawing has proven to be quite successful, however this time I felt it was harder. I struggled to interpret the story onto paper, to adapt around I drew textures and darker gradients  to show when the marriages were in bad phases/ places. I also listened and attempted to draw key words like' black out', ' anger' and tried to use different mark making to portray these words, ie., the dark line and black block is when the victim is blacked out and unconscious. As a more relaxing and less mentally challenging task,  I spent the last hour researching into a different media for research , looking at different films based on marriage and the way it affects families.

Monday 9th March

Today I had my progress tutorial  which highlighted the need  for more primary research. I plan to create samples based from the results of questionnaires asked to a contact who deals with this type of theme as her working role. I plan to bring in old wedding photos of my parents to make it clear for the viewer the concept of weddings and look into the history of marriage and the meaning behind tradition, and the role of religion. I also want to vary my materials and experiment with other key aspects from weddings rather than just rings and lace to ensure my project is exciting and innovative to the viewer. I plan to listen to some divorce documentaries/ podcasts/ questionnaires and blind draw  to show the expressive feelings and emotions when hearing different stories and experiences. I feel this is key as my project is emotion filled, therefore this will be a great source to create samples from based on the drawings. I plan to set myself a quick 3 minute per sample task to ensure efficiency and productivity. From previous feedback in my last projects, I have also learnt the importance of mistakes and experimentation often producing exciting and valuable outcomes. I realised that not everything has to be finished and perfect, this leaving the samples to be more unique and exciting. I feel this insight will lead me to a wider group of artists designers and practitioners who can inspire my project further along new paths.

Saturday 7th/Sunday 8th March

I carried on today by going through my previous to do list by editing and collaging my scanned pages into illustrations, creating  more sample development and ideas and allowing  me to visualise some outcomes. I felt the overall page was successful  but wonder whether the new developed samples were not as successful due to the scans of samples being predominately red colours and  random samples. However, I didn't  use  a clear technique  purposefully to represent miscommunication and confusion. I also asked a lady who works with couples divorcing if she would answer a questionnaire for me as I felt this would be helpful and give me deeper knowledge into a different side of divorce and the techniques she uses within her job. I will use this feedback to create experimental drawings and samples based on information if possible.

Thursday 5th March

Today I experimented with the knit machines and would like to add and twist in the different latex materials of red/ white  that I collected from fabric shops. I created a knit that was in thick maroon yarn in a straight and simple formation, I then experimented further by creating a very tight knit by increasing the tension. I was really pleased with my knit samples  and now plan to hand embroider into them and incorporate other materials and objects which directly relate to marriage to ensure they are unique and interesting.

Tuesday 3rd March

I had planned to use the heat press but unfortunately was unable to do this today. I began by researching deeper into miscommunication and the idea of contrasting and broken or split up words.  I decided to write into samples and then break and crumple it up.  After I decided to continue researching artists and designers for more ideas and inspiration.

I want to visually portray miscommunication and the concept of ' things not being straight forward'.

Friday 28th Feb

I felt today would be most useful if I sourced materials and fabric linking visual research and idea development. I sourced white lace, silk, mesh, fabrics and red materials  which I felt  would link to the idea of marriage/love/lust. I started by experimenting with placing and folding these fabrics together and looking at the juxtaposition. I liked how the lace overlapped the red, leaving some to be seen. Combining these materials so they became one was also fascinating  because they are strong contrasts of materials and totally different structures and designs. I plan to use the heat press to mould them together and to get the red acetate to melt and flatten with the lace/silk. As my project focuses on unity and divorce I plan to interpret rings into my samples and designs as I feel this is a key symbol for marriage and could experiment with crushing and breaking the rings, however I wonder about the potential of this idea.  This may be something I need the wood/metal workshop for.

THURSDAY 27TH

I spent today finding visual research for my project as I have exhausted the creative possibilities with my previous resources and now need to expand my ideas.  Looking deep into visual research, I found artists such as Bruce Nauman, giving ideas for using contrasting words within my samples. I explored how I could use objects to represent the contrast and thought about materials that could be brought together in a juxtaposition. I wanted to incorporate colours, materials and objects that represent my theme of family and marriage which made me think of white lace/ silk/ satin and the contrast of red latex and material/ objects.
To add more depth to my samples and to make them more interesting I was thinking about crossed over knit lines representing miscommunication.

With me feeling slightly creatively exhausted, I tried a different approach by focusing on print and pattern in a simple dress design. I think for the macrame knot this simple straight pattern worked well to show the effect of the repetition clearly. However, it might have been nice to add an increased scale of this sample to part of the dress. The sample in real life is more neon, however I felt the bright colours were too overpowering with the repetition and could be confusing to the eye, therefore I toned down the pink to a colour I was happy with.

Screenshot 2020-04-29 at 14.50.31.pngScreenshot 2020-04-29 at 14.32.43.pngScreenshot 2020-04-29 at 14.33.08.png

After designing something so tight and neon, I decided to be more loose with my placement and experimentation and use two samples, a piece that was placed in the earlier wedding section of the book and a macrame knot with subtle colours that was one of my most recent samples. This was an experimentation with scale, and i feel the bigger design is the most successful and eye catching, possibly the increased scale works so well due to the subtle and monotone colours.

The last development I did was of one of my favourite and in my opinion most successful samples. I really pushed the design possibilities for this sample by digitally deconstructing and reconstructing the sample. I initially visualised the knitted sample as a mini top piece and loose trouser in a larger knit. It was really exciting to experiment with shape and scale in such detail, however  it was challenging to move on from the more successful designs and  not just adapt these. I feel this is a design which involves realistic garment design yet is still innovative and interesting. It was also really fun and quirky to experiment with the idea of a repeated dishwasher tablet being a part of the dress. I left the colours as I felt they really worked together and didn't clash. I really loved the knit pattern from the dish cloth and thought it was interesting to have different aspects and scales of this within one design. The pattern created on the  close up knit  was really fascinating and would have a rich textural element to the design. Because I feel attracted to this sample, it was easier to create designs with it, leading to more  experiments and new designs flowing more readily. I could really visualise the larger knit hanging from the arms or legs and the smaller knit taking over the top area, with added elements such as the dishwasher tablet, making it innovative. Overall, the last design was the chosen one for my final 6 line up.

Friday 20th March

I spent today thinking about the placement of my samples and which samples work well together on a page. I also looked and picked out the key photos that narrate 'everyday married life', selecting my samples that reflect the images and seeing if there are any key textures, shapes and colour combination in the photos that I hadn't responded too.

IMG_1344.jpg

I connected parts such as the knotting for 'tie the knot', to represent photos of my parents after married life and used rough rope in a taupe colour as it fitted with the style of the photo. I then looked at photos of the first born baby. I responded to the cloth used to wrap the baby up, I looked at the key white and cream colours within these photos and used my abstract samples to respond to them when the colour, tone and mood of the samples and photos fitted well. I then looked at bathing the baby and connected my sample of flannel and tissue paper. I was really pleased with these links and feel the samples responded well to the photos. I connected materials and shapes that worked together, for example the colours of clothes were a key link, - the colours and shapes in swimsuits such as neon colours, blue circular shapes, I added french knots in a blue wool to my sample. I also looked at a garden photo where the fence and a washing line with a pink towel featured. I looked at my materials and found a link in the fruit netting material, adding a pink sponge and stitch detail to represent the photo. I was pleased with these and felt the links were clear yet thought about and developed.

Wednesday 18th March

Today was a really successful and interesting day. After rummaging though cupboards looking for many objects with a good contrast of texture and colour, I found a variety which I felt would  work well together. For my first task, I experimented by learning how to do macrame knots. I was really pleased with these and really enjoyed learning a new skill. I experimented with them further by doubling up thread to make them thicker, colouring parts of the string to create a pattern and trying different types of knots. I felt the most successful material was the string as I like the rough texture and natural light brown colour. However the string was very thin, and I would like to create thicker more obvious knot creations to place on the body and to create samples. I would like to push my macrame knot samples further by creating knots using the dish cloths I had collected as this fits with the ' key household objects' and ' tying the knots'.  Although  knots are completely random in comparison to the other wedding objects, they fit completely with the traditional wedding theme.  It will be a key part of my project which I plan to develop further into garment and design development.  As scaling up was a key target from my last project I hoped to use the macrame knots, however don't have the resources presently but to overcome this problem, I plan to scan my macrame knots and use digital photo manipulation to increase the scale and drape on the body.
I really liked the grey flannel combined with the white tissue paper and experimented by placing and doing a repetitive tissue and string sample. I was really drawn to the random pattern of the string with the tissue. The colour contrast with the rustic cream string and old dark grey flannel  was a strong combination. I was surprised and pleased with the other side. The pinching of the tissue had left a pattern that I felt was really interesting and would look great scanned and repeated more. I felt this was a successful raw sample. I managed to  scale up, although I  was concerned not to lose the delicate, fine detail within my samples.
The next sample, I experimented by using more objects. The sample consisted of a dish cloth, dishwasher tablet, tea bag and a pipe cleaner. I really liked the quirky aspect to this sample and how it was so unique in its placement and its objects. A progression step  would be to use other every day materials like toothbrush etc .,  but it's difficult to get these materials at the moment.

Saturday 14th March

Today, as I plan to take my project down a new path and introduce the history of weddings and traditions. I've been researching into key forms of culture and behaviour, and found key ideas of 'tying the knot'.  Interestingly , wedding cakes originated from ancient Rome and were made from Wheat and Barley. The bride was apparently hit over the head with the wedding cake to make her fertile. Wedding Veils were used so the groom couldn't view the bride and refuse to marry her. Something 'old ' was  supposed to repel evil spirits. The wedding guests threw rice at the bride to increase fertility if the crops had been bad and  wheat if the crops had been plentiful. Today rings are used to symbolize purity and everlasting love in marriage, of the unbroken circle. I found these were the key parts  of research I wish to create samples from.

I will look for visuals this afternoon and brainstorm sample ideas.

Wednesday 11th March

I began by placing my work in my book and adding experimental and blind drawing to it which helped to combine the colour palette and shapes created. I intend to take this further and explore these ideas over the next few days.

As yesterday was spent developing and creating lots of samples I feel it would be very beneficial to place these in the correct practical order for my book of development, in order to make it clear what to do next. A key part to make it clear to the viewer of my project theme would be to add wedding photos from my parents wedding, which shows my key exploration of the traditional colours and textures within knit,  lace and my samples. I have mainly created fine knit in white , cream and red to keep with my colour scheme. I found key shapes within my samples and wedding photos that had a direct link. It would be interesting to now look at the contrast between a different type of religious wedding and to look deep into the wedding history of certain items and the clothing. This could be a key part for developing my line up of designs to explore pushing boundaries in traditional wedding wear and colours.

Tuesday 10th March

Today was a really successful day, I began by filling in the pages of miscommunication to make sure my book flows and is clear to the viewer. I printed and used research images that I felt represented miscommunication, such as a photo with a paragraph where certain words and letters have been scribbled out. As knit has been a key part in this project I used a white knitted sample to cover the words to make it unreadable to the reader. I finished the page with a random cut out of words and another knit sample. I was pleased with this and would have liked to maybe print on the knit samples and then unravel parts to show miscommunication using knit and to develop the ideas further. Unfortunately, due to the  current circumstances I don't have the equipment to do this. Another response to show miscommunication was my knitted sample I edited to show 2 different sides which I feel represents miscommunication as both sides are completely different. The first side has  a folded knitted effect  where I added different sentences into the knit sample. Due to the technique I used, the sentence slips when placed over the bumps and are unclear to read representing ' unspoken words' and miscommunication.
The other side of the sample involves the idea of red latex,  a contrasting element to the white and pure knit. The technique where you pick up and drag the knit leaves the sample looking ' messed up and random'. Within these holes I twisted and inserted the red latex. I was really pleased with this sample, I felt it was diverse, unique and exciting. The element that it has two different sides with different meanings fits with the idea of miscommunication and things being hidden, like feelings. The colours used fit within my theme.  I felt to progress these samples to a garment idea,  It would be good to either scale this up, or create a repetition of these where the garment has two different sides with opposite and contrasting meetings. Another sample used on the page was a ring I handcrafted which I encapsulated into red acetate. Overall I felt the pages were successfully placed and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

To help formalise my ideas I produced a step by step plan, fitting in analytical exercises to help me decide the successful and unsuccessful parts of my day and tasks I have set out to do.  The list will guide me to plan more effectively using the links and ideas to help me see what  is missing and what areas can be improved.

I began by placing my work in my book and adding experimental and blind drawing to it which helped to combine  the colour palette and shapes created. I intend to take this further and explore these ideas over the next few days.

I drew from my samples today, creating expressive and blind drawing using a variation of media and techniques.

I also experimented and was successful  with drawing, using tracing paper over my samples  to create block colour, line and textures. I was really pleased with this drawing as it was entirely experimental yet still refined. I would like to use this drawing to create CAD patterns as it is entirely unique.

From the wedding photos I had collected, I could focus in to the key colours and delicate nature of the photos. I created knit samples with white yarn and thin golden brown thread to represent the key colours in the photos.  I felt this highlighted the delicacy within weddings and marriage. I was pleased with this knit sample however, it didn't look the way I planned, with the aim being for the two threads to be joint and tangled, however the knit sample  was still pleasing and represented the colours within the photos, therefore I was still pleased.

I felt I used my time very productively and effectively pushing my project further forward. I experimented initially with encapsulating the rings in plastic to show the bond. I then did further encapsulating experiments, involving mixing the key red acetate, lace  and rings, showing a mix of wedding like objects to portray my project. I felt these were really successful and refined. To develop my samples further, I created CAD prints by scanning the samples/ taking photos and then creating them in different patterns, which would then be printed onto fabrics. I reduced the scale and printed on fabric where the colour is shown clear, with the most successful print onto silky satin. I feel this represents weddings and the delicacy of marriage and love, due to the thin and transparent fabric. To push and exhaust my CAD prints further, I experimented with crumpling the printing paper, which links back to the previous samples that are contorted and twisted. I felt these were effective however did not print as well due to the fabric. I created prints where the printing paper was cut up and placed these randomly in a formation. I also cut a print into strips and pinned them in different directions to relate back to my samples that are random, representing miscommunication. Overall, I was really pleased with my CAD prints, I created various prints, some set in pattern and some random. I also mixed materials, shapes and sizes.

To push these prints further and ensure my prints are not too repetitive and don't lack excitement , I plan to experiment further and manipulate the material more. I would like to make some 3D samples from the prints and add experimental drawing onto them to develop my ideas further.

Wednesday 4th march

As I have developed lots of quick and expressive samples, I plan to place these in my book,  to be able to what I have achieved clearer and work out my next focus  to explore more sample opportunities with my materials. I also feel it would be beneficial to do some experimental drawings from my samples and embed in research photos to show my thoughts  and link ideas. As I have struggled to find research which focuses only on rings and marriage, I have interpreted silver ring shapes into my samples.

The ordering of samples and placement in my book was key to help me see what areas are missing and what my project is lacking. I felt it needed clear research photos with the samples and potentially new materials that are key to love and marriage rather than just rings to be able to clearly portray my idea and concept. Using a divorce application form print out was fitting to set off the first page of my sketchbook with a silky satin dress and my drawing next to it, showing an element to weddings.

Monday 2nd March

I felt today was a successful but slow day. I've planned to use the heat press to squash and combine my materials together and combine the white lace with the red acetate. I would also like to interpret the rings to symbolise marriage, and unity squashing between the acetate to represent a ' commitment'.  I feel the heat press is a perfect tool  to use to represent the bond and unity between a couple when they are married. My sample ideas can be seen as the positive side to marriage showing harmony or can be seen as the contrast  of disharmony with crumpled and damaged red acetate and the delicate and intricate white lace. I felt these initial samples were a great starting point with the  crumpled red acetate  linking to work by artists such as Steven Parrino and Angela De La Cruz. I will encapsulate rings into my work to allow the viewer to have a  clearer view of my concept and idea. I also feel collages would be a key visual element, portraying the different aspects of my project at this stage. To ensure my sketchbook is clear, I plan to print photos that are symbolic to communication, marriage and love.

Sunday 1st March

I plan to experiment  and incorporate metal rings I have sourced and bought for next weeks progression . I plan to experiment by creating patterns with them and place them within my samples so they are incorporated . I would eventually like to create CAD prints using them onto fabric and then stitching into the prints and adding the rings to give a 3D aspect to the print. I would also be interested to  break and crumble  the ring within my samples and then to encapsulate it within the red latex and lace.

Wednesday 26th Feb

Today I experimented with the knit machines. I had planned to work from key words linking through divorce and family break ups such as ' miscommunication' and ' juxtaposition'. I produced a knit sample by using a technique  which created folds in a random and contorted design which i felt linked to miscommunication . I created my knit sample using the colour white to represent marriage and added a red thin knit strip within it to show the miscommunication and a link to represent love and lust.

Review Monday 24th Feb.

What have you learnt?

To respond quickly to themes with less inhibition, to illustrate with more flair and use of different materials and media. Learn about changes in society and to look deeper at how I feel personally, with a creative response using different media.

What have you improved upon?

Exploring textures and exhausting ideas. Being more free within my work and finding that sometimes the 'mistakes' are the best outcomes.

What have you excelled at?

Being more open minded and pushing boundaries when creating. Combining exciting samples into outcomes, looking and developing where the sample best fits on the body with different scales and proportions.

What do you hope to achieve at the end of the project?

Hope to have pushed myself as a creative individual and the creative possibilities within my next project. To have explored new and exciting techniques, ideas and creative possibilities within my theme of marriage, family and relationships.
